Beyond Bristol History

Bristol Gyratory - Quirky Circuit Walk

Published July 2008. This is my first full colour book, with easy to follow maps and great photographs. The basic walk can take about 4 hours, but with diversions to the museums and other sites along the way can be extended to several days. Sites are easily accessible, even when venues are closed.

Sites on the walk range from the obscure to the glaringly obvious, ranging from ancient monuments to modern art, and  always with fascinating details. This is not a simple history walk but an incentive to really open your eyes to this city.

This will challenge those who think they know the city, encourage those who don't  and provide a great souvenir for visitors.

Stone & Spa Walk/3 Bridges Walk

Published June 2009: 2 complementary walks books on Bath, both starting from the centre near the Tourist Information Office.  Both avoid main roads and the main tourist sites where possible, as well as having some fun at Jane Austen's expense. Both have colourful images and maps to guide you to the sites, and fascinating details on places and people of the city.

These books work well as walking guides, but also provide a quirky, colourful souvenir of the city. Each costs £7.99 from local booksellers such as Good Buy Books, Bath Tourist Office, the Museum of Bath at Work, OldfieldPark Bookshop,  Stanfords in Bristol and Radstock Museum. Any bookshop can order them for you.

A Nice Walk

"Cheltenham has no cathedral,no stately homes,no theme parks, beaches or spectacular scenery. No major battles were fought here, not does any famous figure tower over the town. It is known for its spa, but visitors are generally warned off this unpalatable tipple. But the spa, and the money it attracted, paid for the country's first garden city, and a surprising number of talented and well known characters are associated with it.

The term most often associated with the town seems to be  'nice' but not in any derogatory way. This walk is designed to take the reader on a circuit of the town, visiting lesser known sites, and providing unusal anecdotes on the buildings and people associated with them. So, if you would like to know about a politicised dog, a drunken circus clown, a pioneer of world music or an engineer who was green way ahead of his time, please read - or walk - on."
